A Series on Our Beliefs

Week 4: God's Word Is To Be Applied

1.      Illumination

1.1.  Definition

Illumination is the work of the Holy Spirit by which He helps believers understand, receive, and apply the truth of Scripture.

1.2.  Scripture

1 Corinthians 2:10–14

1.3.  Summary of Illumination

We need the Spirit’s illumination because Scripture is spiritually discerned.

We need sound interpretation because Scripture is written in language.

2.      Interpretation

2.1.  Allegorical or Semi-allegorical

Meaning that there is another meaning or hidden meaning to be revealed.

2.2.  Normal, Literal, and Grammatical Interpretation

The basic principle means to understand the text plainly.

2.3.  How do we apply Normal, Literal, and Grammatical Interpretation?

Get a great Study Bible      – Ryrie Study Bible

Get a great commentary     – Bible Knowledge Commentary

Online resource                – Precept Austin

Scripture only has one true interpretation but it has many applications.

3.      Application

Observation – Read

Interpretation -What is being said

Application – How do I apply this to my life

If you have difficulty in finding an application for your life, think of yourself as a Bible SPECTator and ask yourself the following questions.

S     - is there any sin for me to forsake?

P    - is there any promise for me to claim?

E    - is there any example for me to follow?

C    - is there any command for me to obey?

T    - is there a truth for me to embrace?

Write it down in the first person.

Write the application as a prayer to the Lord.

Write it as a decision you are making to personally change your life.

Share

Purpose to share with someone else each day something you gained from your quiet time.

This will help you remember what you have learned and encourage another.

Application

James 1

1.      Decide to Decide – vv. 16-18

Decide how you are going to decide truth.

2.      Dive in and Dig! – vv. 19-22

Implanted Word

Deeply root the truth into your heart. Change your beliefs.

3.      Do the Do - 1: 23-25

To look and not change is not true belief.

Beliefs change behaviors.

The Spirit of God takes the Word of God (Revelation, Inspiration, Inerrancy, Preservation) and changes (Illumination, Interpretation) the person (Application) of God.

Would you recommit with me today that:

·       This is THE Word of God.

·       I will ask the Holy Spirit to guide my thinking as I read.

·       I will interpret God’s Word in its normal, literal and grammatical context.

·       I will apply it to my life and allow the truths to change my beliefs and my behaviors.
