Psalm 62: Only God

Do You Trust God?

When there is a Gap between Expectation and Reality, what do you fill it with?

Trust or suspicion?

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Who, What, Where, When and Why of Trust.

1.     Who is God? (That I should trust Him.) – vv. 1-2

Literally, “Only to God is my soul silence.”

Alone – Only

Occurs in verses 1,2,4,5,6 and 9.

In the Hebrew, the verse begins with “Only”

Elohim - Strong and mighty One.

This name for God occurs over 2,500 times in the Old Testament.

Salvation — a means of preserving from harm, deliverance.

David is speaking about physical deliverance in this passage but can be applied to spiritual.

“Only God can bring my soul to silence in rest because He can bring me deliverance from harm.”

Rock – boulder, mountain

It is one of the strongest images Israel had for stability, protection, trustworthiness, and strength.

The OT calls Yahweh the Rock (34 times) because he is the one Israel can stand on, hide in, and return to. The image gathers together strength, refuge, permanence, covenant faithfulness, justice, salvation, and exclusive divine reliability.

There is a strong theological correlation to the NT.

Matthew 16:16–18

The rock is Christ — the one Peter has just confessed.

In the OT, Yahweh is the Rock because he is the secure foundation, refuge, deliverer, covenant protector, and faithful God.

Matthew 16 is presenting Jesus as the true divine foundation of God’s people.

Rock – secure, solid foundation that cannot be destroyed.

Salvation – deliverance

He saves me from sin, self and the selfishness of others.

Stronghold - a strongly fortified defensive or military structure.

When you are attacked by others – you need protection – that is a stronghold.

God gives:

·       Security (Rock)

·       Salvation

·       Stronghold

When life comes at you bringing insecurity, impossible situations and increased threats:

·       Only—toward God is my soul silent, From Him is my salvation.

·       Only—He is my rock, and my salvation, My tower…

How should we respond to this knowledge of God?

Shaken - to be caused to be shaken in one’s resolve.

2.     What happened to cause me to lose trust? – vv. 3-4

Threaten                   – verbally attacked, character assassination and slander

Attack                      - kill intentionally and with premeditation.

Bring him down         - To drive away, disassociate

Lying                                  

Two faced betrayers  

Ephesians 4:31

Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice.

Rejection, Vengeance, Loss of Temper, Argue and fight, Abusive Speech, irrational intent to hurt another

Nothing eradicates trust more than bitterness.

David lost everything that he had and still had everything that he needed.

Selah – It comes from a root to “rest” or “pause”

3.     Where should I go. Only? – vv. 5-8

Hope is believing God for the future. It is a choice.

“Only—toward God is my soul silent, from Him is my hope.”

Level with God – Read the Psalms – They are brutally honest. (Like this one.)

Often, they start with outpoured pain and they end with outpoured praise.

Aeschylus:

“He who learns must suffer. Even in sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until—in our own despair and against our will—wisdom comes by the awful grace of God.”

God is our safe harbor. It’s OK, you can pour out your pain, confusion and hurt to him.

4.     When do I get in trouble? – vv. 9-10

When my focus is on people.

When I say, “I am at rest with everything is good between me and God AND others.”

It is – Only God.

People are but a vapor.

Manipulating circumstances and trusting in life situations brings disappointment and heartache.

5.     Why does God care…. for me? – vv. 11-12

Strength belongs to God – power

God is omnipotent.

Hesed – faithful love belongs to God

loyal love - an unfailing kind of love, kindness, or goodness.

·       He is able to save because He is completely sovereign.

·       He is willing to save because steadfast love belongs to him.

·       He is able to mete out justice because of his infinite wisdom.

Application:

“God’s plan and His ways of working out His plan are frequently beyond our ability to fathom and understand. We must learn to trust when we don’t understand.”

Obeying God is worked out within well-defined boundaries of God’s commands.

Trusting God is worked out in an arena that has no boundaries.

It often seems more difficult to trust God than to obey Him.

Trusting God is not a matter of my feelings but of my will. 

Nothing happens that cannot be used for God’s glory and our good.

Trusting God in the midst of our pain and heartache means that we accept it from Him.

There is a vast difference between acceptance and either resignation or submission.

If we don’t then we practically believe:

God was not in control when “it” happened. He is a good god that is not always powerful.

When anxious: practice “holy silence”

Pause, breathe, pray a simple trust-affirming phrase – “God is my rock.”
