Summer In The Psalms
Psalm 19: God Speaks
1. The Sky declares the Glory of God – General Revelation
When was the last time you looked up into the sky especially when you were away from the city and on a clear night?
1.1. Speaking without words
St. Francis of Assisi said - "Preach the Gospel at all times; when necessary, use words.
One light-year is the distance light travels in one year, which is about 6 trillion miles. (5.88)
Our solar system
· Edge of the solar system (Oort Cloud): 2 light-years from the Sun.
Our galaxy (Milky Way)
· Diameter: About 200,000 light-years.
The local neighborhood
· Nearest star (Proxima Centauri): about 4.24 light-years away.
The observable universe
· Estimated galaxies: Perhaps a trillion.
· Estimated stars: 10²⁴
Why the sun? It quietly dethrones pagan sun‑worship.
David was confronting all the religions of the day and saying, your gods are fake! The sun itself is one more preacher proclaiming the glory of the one true God!
1.2. Sun shines on God’s design
The Scale of God’s Creation
• The Sun is about 864,000 miles in diameter—roughly 109 Earths across.
• Its volume is so vast that about 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it.
• When we consider its size, we are reminded that creation is not small, accidental, or ordinary.
It points us upward to the greatness of the Creator.
The Power God Sustains
• One second of that energy could power the entire United States for millions of years.
• Yet this overwhelming power is not chaotic.
It is upheld, governed, and restrained by the God who speaks and creation obeys.
The Grace in Its Distance
• That distance is not merely a measurement—it is grace.
The Faithfulness of Its Light
• Every sunrise preaches the faithfulness of God. Morning after morning, creation testifies that the Lord is constant, dependable, and kind.
The Wisdom That Makes Life Possible
• This is not blind chance. It is wisdom on display—the careful ordering of creation by the God who gives light, life, and breath to all things.
“Like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber” – joy and splendor of God’s glory
“Rejoices as a strong man to run his course” – strength and purpose of God’s glory
“From one end of the heavens… nothing is hidden from its heat” – consistency and reach of God’s glory.
Three creative ways of using the sun as a metaphor of the glory of God!
The vast heavens feel far away; the sun’s heat is felt on your skin.
General Revelation – All of humanity can see the grace of God in creation.
Titus 2:11
Romans 1:18–24
General Revelation
Because God reveals His glory throughout the universe, all humanity is left without excuse.
As we continue on in this Psalm, we go from the massiveness of the universe to looking at the sun and now we zero in even more specific – to the Word of God.
2. The Scriptures displays the Goodness of God – Special Revelation
The instruction of the LORD is perfect, renewing one’s life;
The testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making the simple wise.
The precepts of the LORD are right, making the heart glad;
The command of the LORD is radiant, making the eyes light up.
The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever;
The ordinances of the LORD are reliable and altogether righteous.
Note the progression.
Restoration – wisdom – joy – clarity – endurance – righteous living.
1. The Soul demonstrates the Grace of God
1.1. Wealth – vv. 11,12
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, True
whatever is honorable, Trustworthy
whatever is just, Right
whatever is pure, Radiant
whatever is lovely, Pure
whatever is commendable Righteous
—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.
dwell on
The imperative form of logizomai makes it a command;
The word “think” in the Greek speaks of the act of careful reflection.
Do not miss this: Paul is not offering a suggestion; he is giving a command.
The peace of God guards you – v.7
And the God of peace guides you! – v. 9
1.2. Warning – vv. 12,13
1.3. Walk - v. 14
1. acceptable to you, LORD – what is pleasing, favor, accepting with approval
2. words of my mouth - What goes into the heart comes out the mouth.
3. meditation of my heart - Who ever controls the heart controls how it is fed.
4. my rock and my Redeemer.
· Rock – secure, solid foundation that cannot be penetrated.
· Redeemer – One who buys back that which is in the slave market and
offers freedom.
Application
God clearly has shown His glory to ALL humanity.
His Word is clear to ALL believers to be believed and behaved.
What changes do you need to make in light of God’s clear Word this morning?
Our response?
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you,
LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.
